Asparagus is one of my favourite vegetables
Such a favourite that three years ago on a strange whim (which may or may not have had something to do with being pregnant and borderline nuts) and slightly urged on by my Dad, I decided to start an asparagus bed
What you need to know about an asparagus bed is that you order the crowns, plant them and then you have to wait THREE YEARS before you can harvest a single spear of the stuff
You have to lovingly build up the bed, fertilise it, protect it from the ravages of chickens and deer and you do this for YEARS before you even get a chance to taste anything
There have been times over the last three years when I have wondered if this was a good idea, if I should use that bed for something else or if I was engaged on some particularly crazy endeavour
But then look what I found this weekend! Yes, it may be only one reasonable sized spear but there are more coming and this time I get to eat it!
Next Saturday will be the inaugural Muddling asparagus tasting – it may be the smallest tasting every but it’s going to be enjoyed – this has been 3 years coming!
p.s. one day I will get my iPhone to focus on the right thing rather than my pretty wheelbarrow in the background…

Erm, you know you can touch the screen where you want it to focus right?
LOVELY! Well done you. We are awaitng our asparagus tips for planting, blimey it’s going to be a long wait before we eat them.
Is your wheelbarrow from Sarah Raven? I looked at it and wondered if I could justify it. Already have two….xx
I did that – it still didn’t focus on the right bit…
Wheelbarrow was a birthday present (possibly from Sarah Raven given I’ve dropped MANY hints) but so light and lovely (sorry to be a gardening products enabler)
Afraid it is a LONG wait but am hoping it lives up to expectations – and the expectations are quite substantial
3 years? I always thought it was 7! that makes 3 years sound like rather doable.
I’m so rubbish at getting any gardening done due to work stress that I’ve not yet planted anything this year. Oh the shame.
It looks tasty, enjoy!
7??? Dear goodness why would anybody ever try and do that? So glad it’s 3 years only – been far long enough
It may just be one spear, but it’s a great spear! Enjoy. I love asparagus.
Isn’t it fab – went out to look at it on the way to work this morning – can’t wait for the weekend
It is a very pretty wheelbarrow though…
Isn’t it and in my favourite colour too!
I’m impressed, I barely have the focus to plant daffodils x
Am doing a lot less well with daffodils (and don’t get me started on the snowdrops in the autumn and which didn’t really amount to anything )
