The Friday Rant Club – why can’t we have phones that are fit for life?

I love my phone.  Absolutely love it.  On the couple of occasions when it (or its brothers) have died I have felt almost as if I’d had a limb chopped off.

But why oh why are modern phones so fragile?

In order to not crack the screen, have nasty scratches which stop it working or various other ills I have to spend extra money on a variety of cases and covers to make sure it doesn’t suffer an untimely death.
Back when I had my first mobile they were admittedly huge but at least you could drop them into your handbag and know that they’d come out in one piece and without various parts not working.  If I just dropped my iphone into my handbag it’d come out the worse for wear from an encounter with my keys and it doesn’t take much of a bump for the screen to break either.  I know, been there, seen it, cried at the lovely man at the Genius Bar who replaced it for free (it may have had something to do with him wanting to get the over-emotional lady and her rampaging toddler out too…)

Surely if we can make phones that can virtually tap dance on their own we can make them sufficiently robust to survive daily life?

We can make suitcases that can be blown up without getting a single scratch but we can’t add a nifty little cover to a phone so that if it falls out of your pocket you aren’t reduced to taping over the screen with sellotape and hoping that the spiderweb of cracks doesn’t do something horrid to your eyes*

Come on phone manufacturers – enough with the smaller, faster, shinier, we need phones that actually survive a week in the average female handbag!

The Friday Rant Club is a chance to get those niggles, those irritants, those things that make you want to throw a tantrum off your chest before the weekend.

I’m looking for some guest ranters – if you’d like to get something off your chest send me an email or mention it to me on Twitter. Any subject, just has to be something that has really got your goat.  Or post your own rant over at yours and there’s a nice little button over there on the right that you can use to show that you too needed to vent.

  • You are absolutely right, I unfortunately do not have an all singing all dancing phone and mine is seriously dated, but it has been dropped so many times, had coffee spilt on it, sucked a lot but a toddler that it has been soggy, buried in sand and still works fine, albeit a few scratches but nothing serious. Then I hear my friends with their sooper, dooper phones saying about screens breaking or scratches and they’ve only had it a month!

  • Totally agree. I guess they want you to buy their latest upgrade so it’s in their best interests to make sure they fall apart. I’m sure those phones that look like bricks, like my very first mobile phone, would probably have lasted a lot longer than some of the models I’ve had since. Although I’d look like an idiot using it now.
