Is there some conspiracy to make travel as miserable as possible?

It’s early. Far too early.

Strangely for someone who is used to getting up in the night with the small people, getting up at that time and having to put on clothes and go to the airport is much harder.

But here I am at the airport.

But this airport process seems to be designed to be as unpleasant as possible.

The high-vis jacketed somebody sending you to a security queue at the other end of the hall for no apparent reason.

Having to take off your shoes so they can be scanned despite the fact there is no way to hide anything in their minimalist design.

The fact lipgloss is classified as liquid despite having the consistency of gloop and needs to be taken off for a special test. The debate over whether lipstick might also be a liquid.

The inevitable request to pull out the carefully packed contents of my handbag so we can have the inquisition over what exactly my breastpump is. The questions over my empty milk bottles and bags by a system that only seems to let you transport breastmilk if you’re travelling with a baby.

And then into the departure lounge. Except this isn’t really a lounge, it’s a warehouse, a cold warehouse with really uncomfortable seats and the choice between over priced Starbucks or a dry bagel.

And the waiting – the wait to find out your gate, the wait at the gate, the wait to leave the stand, the wait to take off.

And then you have to do it all over again on the way home.

Yes, it’s 5.30am, it’s Monday and I’m off to Madrid for the day. Which, trust me, sounds far more glamorous than the reality.

    >I feel for you, I used to travel with my job and everyone thought it was exciting, but no, dull, boring and long, long days

    >My old boss had a competition when he was a young 'un which was to see which grad trainee could get furthest away from the office and still be back by the end of the day. He managed Madrid, and won. Presumably no delays for him that day!

Hope you make it there and back with sanity intact. x
