>Notes from my smallholding – we’re electric!

>This year I will not be sharing the fruits (and veg) of my labours. Oh no. This weekend we installed my birthday present from Mr Muddling – an electric fence for the vegetable patch.

I realise to most people this is not the first thing they would ask for as a gift but, after having the majority of our produce eaten by the rabbits and deer, I wanted to fortify my patch against all comers.

So far it seems to be working. We shall see.

At least I imagine my patch will become more alluring to the four legged intruders* very soon because I can see the first shoots of the potatoes coming up, there are leaves on my transplanted raspberry canes and we have three rows of seedlings under the cloche. Only problem is that I can’t remember if I planted spinach then two rows of carrots or carrots and then spinach. Must remember to label properly.

The onions are also doing well and I finally managed to plant sugar snap seeds to grow up the fence.

Fingers crossed my fortifications work and this year we get to eat some of it!

*and one small two legged one who seems to have inherited my fondness for digging! Which is great apart from when it’s digging somewhere I have things planted

    >You know should you ever wish to leave the Uk I think you'd love living in New Zealand. We give each other weird gifts there too – like electric fences, and chainsaws. How far away from me are you? (Need to know where to come for fresh veges!)xx

    >We tend to favour the practical presents in our house too and have good fun with it. An electric fence is a great gift 🙂 Jen.

    >Sounds like a very sensible present to me if you're as keen as you are to be self sufficient. The rabbits damage our crops too and I'm afraid the farmer goes out with his gun!

    >D once got me a staple gun for valentines day (and I actually liked it after I got over the shock)! We potted up our peppers this weekend- this is our first year with proper space to do veg growing- it's so exciting isn't it?
We had our own asparagus with our tea on sunday too- sooooooooo nice!
    p.s. thanks for the tag!

    >We've just finished making some raised veg beds, so the next job is to plant this year's seeds. I'm so excited! We just had pots last year, but still managed to eat loads of our own produce, so this year will be even better. Plus we're getting chickens too 🙂
