The joys of pumping – my boobs have developed different personalities

Incredibly (despite both being attached to MY chest), my boobs appear to have taken on very different personalities since I asked them to put up with expressing three feeds a day for five days a week.

Alternatively this could just be a sign that I’m spending too much of my time sat on the bed in the first aid room at work hooked up to an electric breast pump…

My right boob is a champ, able to produce huge amounts of milk, happy to have the pump on and more than happy to chug away, producing a happy stream of the white stuff whilst I can get on with the important things in life like checking my email, reading blogs and having a chat with friends. Obviously with the aid of a safety net in the form of a very low budget hands free set up comprised of two hair bands.

My left boob is an altogether different personality. She requires coaxing before she’ll even consider giving up her precious milk. Not for her just popping the pump on and sitting back and letting nature take its course. Oh no. Mrs Left Boob requires massage to stimulate her let down, lots of time with the first suck mimicking bit by the pump and even then might not do anything until I’ve shown her some video of Babygirl being cute and chatty. And even when she’s decided that she’ll share her milk, for some reason its always on her side that the pump doesn’t work properly. And she won’t produce her share easily. No, she wants breast compressions and coaxing the whole way.

But between them they are continuing to provide enough milk for Babygirl whilst I’m away (with the help of a bit of Fennel tea and fenugreek) which makes it all worth while. She’s thriving on it and given our worries about whether she’s a bit sensitive to cow’s milk I’m very happy to keep her on human milk for the time being.

    >LOL! Love they way you've written that. I used to love expressing far more than breastfeeding. In fact (weird I know!) I even ditched breastfeeding in favour of expressing and bottle feeding.

    >What a great post, womans bodies are great

    >Full of admiration for you. Wish I'd know about fennel tea etc when I had to express for a while. I could never get much out with the electric pumps but the different sides defo behaved differently. Very amusing post

    >Good on you doing this each day, such commitment! No wonder our babies get frustrated feeding from us sometimes when boobs have different personalities!

    >You are doing a fabulous job. Truly. And making me smile along the way ; )

    >Hunni being able to provide for your child is amazing, for many reasons I was unable to breastfeed other than two feeds but the fact that I did those two was so important to me, knowing he was getting some of that vital milk. I hope your really proud of yourself and what your doing for your girl!

    >You're doing so great! I never dared to do the pumping, but even then our boobs seem to match – I'm right-boobed, too. Or was it left? Dammit – I'll remember in a few months.

    >Haha. That was really funny.
I admire you. I have a pump in my cupboard, bc I thought I'd pump every now and then, giving daddy the chance to feed little L, or even sneak out of the house for a few hours. It just never really worked. It did, technically. But I fell so much like a… cow… I gave up after a few times pumping. I don't think I could be as persistent as you are. Well done!!!

    >I felt. Nobody was falling. 🙂

    >When I had to pump for six months straight my right boob was killing my left in the competition. Righty was producing like 7 bottles a day and lefty barely 1. I was shocked by the difference. I am so happy to be done pumping now that my baby's tongue issues are resolved. It's so much work. You are doing great!!

    >I now see boobies in a totally different light, having never breastfed myself!
