Time does fly – 5 years ago today I was getting married (actually by now we’d done the getting married thing and were onto the more important business of celebrating the fact !).
Incredible when you think how things have changed since then – we’ve moved in together (and survived), moved out of London and into the project house, had one baby and now have another on the way. Life is unrecognisable from where it was back then – we’ve grown up and become grown ups.
I guess its a sign of how far things have changed that when I was looking for a photo for this post that I realised I have none of the nice wedding photos on my laptop – 5 years ago getting married was all absorbing, now its children, sorting out the house and a much wider, more interesting life that has taken over.
And yet, the reading we had during our ceremony still very much articulates how I see our relationship – if anything, having weathered the various storms it holds truer today.

“Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides.

And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.

Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love which any of us can convince ourselves we are.

Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.”
